| Pleione, can be grown outdoors in mild winter areas. Some Pleione
are hardy to USDA Zone 7, Sunset Zones 5-9, 14-24, about +5°F for
brief periods, and - with snow or mulch - will probably withstand
lower temperatures. Pleione can also be grown in the average
home in a north or east window and are often called 'Window-sill
Orchids'. Pleione are native to China, Nepal, Tibet, and Taiwan. They grow in moss on the ground, trees or rocks. P. formosana and its cultivars and P. limprichtii are the hardiest and do well in the garden. They need loose, humusy, well drained soil and a sheltered spot in full or afternoon shade. In containers, a media of equal parts of bark, pumice and peat is suitable. |
